I started working in recruitment in Norwich in the late 1980’s when recruitment supply to the logistics and manufacturing sector was still very new – I know, I don’t look old enough – right?

I was working for a subsidiary of one of the largest recruitment companies in the world, in an office in central Norwich without a single computer or typewriter. All of our candidate and client information was on handwritten cards (never a good thing if anyone has ever seen my handwriting) in Rolodexes on our desks.

It was a time of high unemployment and huge availability of potential temporary workers. A time when you had to be licensed to operate an employment business, where we weren’t allowed to advertise in Jobcentres and where an hourly rate of £2.50 an hour/£100 a week was considered a good wage.

I worked for this company for almost a year before the subsidiary was merged with the parent and then worked for the parent company for a further year. I went on to join a young Norwich based recruitment business where I launched a new industrial division for them and then repeated the move again to join another Norwich based recruitment business who I worked for almost 20 years.

I have been a director and managing director of two employment businesses and for all of my time in recruitment I have specialised in temporary worker supply and permanent recruitment for the Logistics and Manufacturing sectors. I have had the pleasure of working with a huge number of individuals and an enormous range of Norfolk businesses, large and small, past and present.

Over the 30+ years I have worked in recruitment, I have seen the industry mature significantly but recognise that in some areas the sector still has a way to go to achieve the professional standards I and many others would like to see it achieve.

I have been a passionate advocate of the increased protection provided to temporary workers – from National Minimum Wage to the Agency Workers Directive, and have always worked with passion and integrity and with the best interests of the individuals I place and the companies I work with at the forefront of my mind.
