Have you ever had to read the same sentence over 5 times because your mind can’t seem to process? Or have you ever completely blanked out on what you were about to say or write? If so, you’ve probably experienced a mental block.

With long work hours and our busy lives at home, it’s impossible to keep our minds working in tiptop shape 24/7. To avoid a mental block and make sure our brain is supercharged when we get to work in the morning, it’s important to not only take breaks but to have a set of healthy morning rituals including our morning commute!

According to a recent survey y Car Rentals, a stressful commute can contribute to mental blocks and hinder our productivity. In the survey, they also found that almost 40% of Americans between the ages of 18-24 think about work on their way to the office. Unsurprisingly, they also happen to be the age group most likely to experience road rage.

To help you avoid a mental block and start your day on a clear, refreshed mind, we thought we’d share some simple practices you can implement during your commute that will help you start your day on the right foot.

Say Your Goals Out Loud
Negative feedback can often hinder our motivation. Instead of stressing over negative comments or feedback at work, use it as inspiration to create clear, new goals and repeat them on your morning commute.

You can also use some reverse psychology on yourself and repeat what you don’t want to accomplish or experience. For instance, “I will not take any work home this evening.” Focusing on what you don’t want for yourself during or after work can also be a great motivation booster.

Find Zen Before an Important Presentation
Forget practicing your presentation during your commute. Centering the mind the morning before a big presentation or meeting will improve your focus better than reviewing the material over and over.

Disconnect from the Job
Avoid going through work emails, taking calls or checking your to-do list. For a healthier option, call your loved ones on your hands-free device and use your morning to reconnect and check in with those that matter most to you.

Repeat Positive Mantras
Positive mantras or inspirational sayings are great to repeat during your morning ride to work. Have a list of a few motivational mantras or quotes from your idols to energize and start your day on a positive note.

Listen to an Interesting Podcast
If you usually feel a little down when you get to work in the morning, add a little laughter to your commute by listening to a funny or interesting podcast. Search for topics that are not related to your job to help keep your mind off work while you drive.
